7th Grade English/Language Arts Assignments

Salam, so for the last two days of class this week I want you to reflect on this school year, it's been different for us all! 


What were some challenges, what were some surprising pluses? How have you grown as an individual, as a student, as a Muslim? How do you feel about next year as a student are you ready to move forward? Now that the year is coming to an end what advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of the year? What are your goals for next year?  What are would you change about your schooling and yourself this year? What are you most proud about this year, why? 


Step 1: Write a 2-3 paragraph detailed reply to the questions above. Explain and provide support for  your responses.
Step 2: Create a one pager that is colorful, imaginative and reflective; based on your paragraph.  ( you can draw one or use google slides ( if you use google slides you need to make two)) 

After we read the short story attached please answer the the questions on document. Use complete sentences! 

Don't worry, we won't make you guys write that much. You will receive a random picture and your job is to write a story related to that picture. It's important that the sequence of your narrative is clear, as well as plot structure, setting, and character development. 

Task 1

Decide which nursery rhyme you are going to
use.

Revise the features you would find in a
newspaper story. 

 

Task Two

Think of a headline (eg EVIL TEEN TRAPS
KITTEN DOWN WELL sums up exactly what happens in the rhyme while sounding
exactly like a newspaper headline)

 

Task Three

Write the news story, trying to make it
sound like a real newspaper story. Read through the one I wrote and look at the
different things that make it sound like a newspaper story - like giving the
full names of the people involved and their ages. Write down witness' comments,
like I did in the "EVIL TEEN" story.

Remember, you are making up the story,
based on the nursery rhyme events.

 

Set it all out like a newspaper front page.

In your groups, you are going to find examples of each of the techniques for propaganda that we talked about yesterday. Go through and copy and paste pictures that would fall under the categories for each one. Bonus points if you find commercials that fit the category too! 

Background Info: Everyone is expected to attend the reaping unless they're on death's door. Students could either create a slogan encouraging citizens to attend the reaping or to boycott the reaping. 



Your task: Come up with a propaganda slogan for each of the techniques in your group, then individually choose one to create a propaganda poster out of.

Watch these two short videos and answer the questions on the document

Highlight the main idea for each passage - and then underline the supporting details that back your main idea.

Remember the last movie you saw/ or your favorite movie,  what was it about? Did you enjoy it?

As I told you yesterday, you are going to be taking the Myers-Briggs personality test today. Click on the link that says "Take the Test" and answer all the questions. It's a longer test but in order to get accurate results, please make sure that you are answering them honestly. Then when you finish, you should get a 4 letter "personality". I want you to comment on this assignment with what your personality type is and the name it's given. Also include in your comment whether you think the test was accurate or not - do you think the description describes you well?

Choose a slide for yourself and type your spoken word poem into the slide. After you type your poem, you are going to record yourself saying your poem and then insert it into the slide. Once you've embedded your audio, please make sure to make your slide aesthetically pleasing - or look nice.

Copy and paste your poem/song lyrics/spoken word poem on the document and then apply SWIFT to them. The directions are clearly highlighted for you. We will work on this today and tomorrow Inshallah.

We will be applying SWIFT to this spoken word piece after we watch it in class.

S - Structure (How many lines and stanzas? Is there a rhyme scheme, if not, why?)
W - Word Choice (Select 3-4 lines that are consecutive and stick out to you in terms of wording. Add a "comment" and explain why these lines stick out to you.)

Good morning and Happy Friday Guys,

You may recognize today's poem because we analyzed it before we started reading "A Raisin in the Sun" - which started off our discussion on The American Dream. Please follow the directions, they are clearly stated at the top of the page. If you have any questions, please send an email or make a comment on this assignment.

Chose one of the characters from
the story and make a character trait chart. It should be two columns on the left list their traits and the right provide examples from the text. You should have at least 3 personality traits and 1 physical trait.

Salam Guys, we will have a quiz on Monday on Chapters 1-7, so for today practice with this one to help you be prepared. You need to make sure that you have finished all your readings and the questions that match the chapters

Read the next two chapters and answer the questions

Jumma 3-2-1. Friday work: complete a 3-2-1 on. Khutaba of your choice. Include speakers name and topic, why you chose it and what you liked about it as well. Use complete sentences and provide details.

Instructions for your character poster. Once you are done, please take a picture and attach it for a grade.

Read the instructions on the document and then complete it by the end of the day Friday - please make sure the document remains organized and doesn't become a hot mess express :)

You need to complete the chart for two additional fables for your Friday work. I have attached The Lion and the Mouse as one that you are required to do , and you may choose the second one from the same website (make sure to include the title on the chart).

We've read from two sections from our play and it's time to put your knowledge and critical thinking skills to the test :) Please be thorough in your responses as this assignment will be graded as a quiz and Sr. Afaf and I will be stricter on our requirements for grading. Thank you.

Before we begin reading the play " A Raisin in the Sun" it is important to recognize elements of a drama and how it differs from other fiction we have read.

Complete the attached document from the information you find on pages on 608-609 in the textbook. The texbook link can be found under resources in the classwork section of google classroom.

Look over the first attachment and review the essay on The GOAT. Then, look at how the graphic organizer was done using that article.

Next, Read the Jordan article and complete the graphic organizer attached. Use the GOAT graphic organizer as a reference.

You will use this document to write out your political platform with your partner. Make sure that you follow the directions carefully and that your document is organized and easy to read.

Write a summary response to this talk. Consider these questions as you reflect on this talk in your writing:
* What does it mean to love the world more then the hereafter?
*What happens when we love the world more then the hereafter?
*How do we have a healthy attachment to the world and hereafter?
* How do we use this world for good for us now and for the hereafter?
* What should our greatest pursuit be, does this mean that we don't pursue other things?

You should use examples from the talk but more importantly share YOUR thoughts/feelings about them. Show how you have used this talk to reflect and think about who you are as a Muslim?

For this Friday, we have another 3-2-1 Jumuah Reminder with a video from Imam Omar Suleiman. We thought the title was fitting since we are in 2020 where everything seems to be falling apart around us, yet we always know that Allah (SWT) has the power to change any situation. Please be thorough in your responses and remember that du'aa is the only thing that can change the fate that has already been written.

Hope you all are well and getting work done so you can relax over the weekend.

This week you will complete a 3-2-1 response to an Islamic themed talk.

Step 1:
Choose a talk about something that interests you by someone that you enjoy listening to ( ex. Saad Tasleem, Boona, Nouman Ali Khan, Mufti Menk, Omar Sulieman, Sohaib Webb, Siraj Wahaj, Imam Muamar, Imam Abu Taleb- just to a few choices you can use another if you'd prefer) .
Step 2:
Listen to the entire talk, pause and reflect, rewind if you need to- make sure you understand the talk and the point!
Step 3:
Using the document that I have attached do a 3-2-1 reply. Think about 3 things that you learned from the talk and write them down ( details are important). Next, write down 2 things that you thought were interesting from the talk. Finally, write down what question you still have about the information presented in the talk. ( saying you don't have a question is not an option! )
Step 4:
Review your work and make sure it makes sense. Spelling errors are unacceptable ( you have spell check, use it!).Also, make sure you capitalize and use correct punctuation.
Step 5:
Turn it in!
Step 6:
Check to see any work that you have not completed and do it and turn it in ( this is a good step for my class as well as your others :) ).
Step 7:
Pray all your salat, on time, with good focus and remember me in your duaa :)

Salam and Jumma mubarak. Today you will do another reflection using a talk of your choice. This time you will you the class flipgrid account to record your reflection. Use the document from last week to help you focus your talking points. Your reply should be between 2-3 minutes.

Also, just wanted to share with you that Saturday is the 10th of Muharam ( Muharam is one of the 4 most special months in Islam), and we are advised by our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to fast that day and a day before or after. So, if you can and would like to gain the reward you should try to implement this sunnah, and keep me in your duaa!

I have attached a very simple and brief article explaining the significance of these days.

We are working on plot structure again today, and I would like for you to fill out the diagram once again but this time using the video "Purl" - while watching the video, also think about the subtle messages that come across as we will discuss them after your assignment is completed.

Use this plot diagram to fill out the different elements of the Pixar short, "Hair Love" after watching it together in class.

As discussed in class each Friday you will have an assignment that will require you to respond to an Islamic talk that you find on line. It is important to me that you still get that spiritual connection from your school and feel comfortable and willing to learn and grow as a Muslim. That is my rationale for these assignments. This also covers many speaking and listening standards , so it's still curriculum appropriate! ;)

Below I shared some talks with you to get you started, these are just generic starts to let you get an idea of what I mean, but you are free to choose your own.

Some tips for choosing:
Make it relevant to you - something that matters to you , something you wonder about or something that is currently going on around you/world.
Make sure you can follow along. After a few minutes if you can't understand the accent, vocabulary or subject matter then don't chooses that video.
If the tone of the speaker is to dull/boring for you then don't choose that video.
If the topic is too sensitive, uncomfortable for you or "scary" don't watch it.
