all right Bismillah welcome everybody to the 2324 school year in Shala this parent orientation is for our students in fourth and eighth grade the list of this orientation is just to review some of our policies and love our procedures and also to introduce a few more our policies and procedures that we have worked on them throughout the school year so housekeeping rules before we begin please if you don't mind keep yourself on mute if there are questions you will have we will be I will be going to the presentation it should not take me too long and then at the end we will be giving some time for questions if you like to verbally ask questions but please feel free as I'm speaking that to put questions in the chat we will sister Rana will go ahead and answer this question let me step back a little bit and then choose myself are those of you who might know me I'm so sorry I'm the principal that's important for you to know first and then we keep going and then with me is our assistant principal sister Rana and she will like I mentioned be managing the child and answer any questions that you might have that you would like you know some answers on she can answer them while I am presenting but if there's more clarification you would like feel free towards the end to ask him inshallah I will go ahead and begin we began by present a lesson plan with all that and and being grateful for this opportunity we have once again to see Community to serve serve our children and help being part of that Journey 24 them on to becoming active confident Muslims these are our kids they're not your kids are not mine there are kids and we are our village and we were together to help raise these children we are so blessed and so honored that you have chosen us to be part of this journey with your children and inch although we're looking forward to another successful great school year today we're going to be going over a few things first we will begin with some updates I hope that you all enjoyed your summer and Cholla the admin team does work all summer I got a lot of questions about I hope you and I got some I got a break in the summer and yes we get many breaks but we are working in the summer it's a great time for us at the admin side to reflect on the school year and to work on things that we'd like to see in the upcoming school year so a lot of work has been done this summer and Bella it will be a smooth year because of all the work we did and summer we spent we will go ahead and this presentation and review some important areas of our student handbook we will introduce some new policies we have for our families and then talk a little bit about the first week of school and get you oriented oriented to what's going on first what are we even doing so the first thing is of course we are always looking to improve and update this year we have updated our social studies current curriculum we are using a regular oven that focuses more on the inquiry skills it will be a lot of project-based learning and will be very different from our normal from a traditional you know where you have you know you read us chapter and answer questions and have a quiz it's getting very different to allow our students to think critically we have worked a lot since last year and through the summer and updating and play some Scotch-Irish we have creative all brand new standards we will be piloting this year and Shala so we're really excited to get that roller to roll that out Angela we have also updated our curricula we're still using our Eureka resource but an updated resource and that as well so there's lots of work that has been happening behind the scenes when it comes to our curriculum we have a through the end of last year and just just a couple of days ago been working with an organization called peaceful schools to bring a restorative practices to our schools the main mission of restorative practices is to build positive relationships among students staff and students and to continue to work to build that community that we are no is so important within our students in ourselves and working and also working through constant conflict resolution strategies we are here not just to teach our students that means content but we're also here to help them grow up to be successful in all areas and this is one thing that we are working towards for this year in sha Allah lots of work on him books and updating policy is through feedback of parents through feedback of Staff through just reflection about what things are working and what things we need to get better on together some important things happening Monday is our open house yes this Monday Summer's over and she'll that all of you are ready to go for the new school year are open house will be from 10 to 2 you are well going to drop by anytime during these hours and just go ahead and meet your child's teacher drop off supplies get a quick introduction about what's going to be happening in the classroom so we encourage everybody to stop by Monday a big reason why we doing this presentation before you know the first week of school is for you if you have any questions after the presentation that you're like oh I wish I had asked this you'll find us around Monday feel free to ask as more clarification when you see us and then we really hope that you can join us Tuesday is the first day of school we'll see you bright and early and she'll also help we're all working on our bedtimes and getting to bed earlier so we can make sure we're up on the first day of school August 27th will be our ptso back to school Cook-Out and they will be sending more information soon 21st there that last week of August will be having that testing or beginning of your map testing testing is a diagnostic test that we do three times a year beginning middle and end and it is focused on student growth we don't do many high stakes end of your testing our it's really important for us to see how our students are going throughout the are in our map testing platform really gives us great information to see how our kids are doing throughout the school year on 34 on August 31st and she'll let you have the opportunity to come have the meet with me and the admin team myself and sister Rhonda just for an informal chat and he just to get to know one another our new families in a returning families and left have some one-on-one time with you so there is an opportunity in Shala on that morning at the 31st for all other important dates and information are school calendars on a website so please use that calendar when you're thinking about maybe vacations you're thinking about end-of-year traveling all things that happened with their families please use our school calendar because it's important that your kids are in school and not missing too much school so use that if you are making any travel plans and support . so we are going to do a quick review of of the main policies in our student handbook however we have very extensive policies that are represent our handbook that we will be sharing with all of you next students and their families are urged to review the actual language of these policies and procedures which include information about rights and responsibilities and if you have any questions about a specific policy please feel to reach out we are not going to be going for the whole handbook that would take days but we are just going to go ahead and highlight some of the main areas that we wanted to share with you today quick review school hours are 7:45 to 3:05 doors open at 7:30 their 7:45 is when we begin our morning assembly our morning assemblies are a fabulous way to start the day our teachers bring a lot of energy and our kids bring it as well so we encourage people to make to make it for our morning assembly which begins at 7:45 or dismissal being at 3:05 not 3 its 3:05 so that's why we hold the door for those extra five minutes to make sure we're ready to dismiss and it ends at 3:25 students are tardy if they arrive after 8018 is first. If you arrive after that then you would be considered party if you are a parent who needs Act care services because your work hours are longer we do have Aftercare available we did send the sign up last week so if you would like to register please go ahead and do so we also have day passes if you know if there's a couple of days or some such a it is changing and you need extra care just go ahead and reach out to our front office and they will be sure to help you in that process if you are a late pick up you'll be charged 5 minute $5 per minute after 3:30 so please make sure that you communicate if you're going to be late so we can follow up in jello all our students everybody from preschool Trey does have a snack time and it is a family responsibility to provide a nutritious snack and lunch for their child we did not provide refrigerating or heating services so make sure whatever you to pack your child if you choose to pack lunches is something that does not need heating or cooling we do have a lunch program on site through as Maya the cafeteria in the ER in the Masjid parents who would like to purchase a hot lunch every day for their child buy a lunch card from the school website however snack must be send every day with your child because we do not provide a snack so please make sure to press to purchase those lunch car the website we did send an email I believe earlier this week just out letting the lunch policy so please go ahead and take a look at that if you haven't by the way if you are now receiving emails in but you did receive this text and did were able to join us sometimes emails that are Yahoo or Hotmail they do go and spam or emails for some reason go to spam so please if you're not getting your emails to check your spam older if they're not if you're still not receiving it then go ahead and call sister may who is our administrative assistant and she will be able to help you out in Charlotte students who have allergies do you need to be notified so we can work with you to develop an emergency medical plan for your child so please make sure you make the school to wear for medications for example if your child has allergies or you know prayers for migraines whatever the case maybe we are not allowed to have give your child any medication without any proper documentation for example your child has a headache in the morning and you some Tylenol and your child old enough to take Tylenol that is something that should not be happening you needs to have all medication stored with us and fill out the proper documentation and then we will be more than happy to go ahead and support tell that they're not feeling well of course this is only for things like allergies like consistent medical issues if your child has a fever and so forth and they should be staying finally because we are lunch program is only mine play through Thursday on Fridays we have the opportunity for bake sale the first bake sale will speed the second week of school so the first Friday there will be no bake sale the lunch cards that you purchase for Monday through Thursday cannot be used I'm with an N for the bake sale we will be sending out a separate sign up form for Bakesale they will be emailed out quarterly and please respect the deadline because there is a lot of work that we have to do on our end after we figure out how many people what one snack or to snack or one slice or two slice and all the things that we need to do is make sure everybody is getting what they want so please make sure that you are the deadlines that we have established uniform in Charlotte everybody has their uniform ready to go because students are expected to be in full uniform on the first day of school if you're waiting on an arrival because things got delayed please email the teacher purchase so we know that your uniform that you've to take care of that it's just delayed please make sure that the polo shirts and jumpers are embroidered with the school emblem in white embroidery girls in 4th to 8th grade are required to wear proper hijab and to make or that their head job is 10 properly and not showing hair or neck as part of our school uniform and we appreciate parents to help us out and this area and also we also for the boys we expect this uniform that are loose and appropriate this year we are replying that the middle school have a PE shirt on PE days remember one for the kids to be more comfortable in there playing number to that it just for Hygiene purposes our kids are getting older and it's better if they're in the PE uniform on gym days so we are requiring requiring the gym sure only for middle schoolers as of now the other students should not be do not need to purchase the PE shirt they'll be wearing the regular uniform all five days so that is something that is new this year and please pay attention to that detailing shop there's a fire hazard if I can clarify I'm the white embroidery is on the red shirts for a fourth and fifth grade the navy blue embroidery is for the light blue shirts and Cholla again if there's any questions are going please feel free to ask them the chat or wait till the end we know that our kids come to my show they're really good with the uniform for the most part but I do enjoy some dress down days so we're just down days we do have certain guidelines that our students should be thinking about when they're deciding what to wear on that day the dress down days are the last Tuesday of every month they should still modest wear loose-fitting Point loose-fitting pants for boys girls to the matter no skinny jeans no leggings for the boys pants only no shorts that's a rule we have no skinny jeans no tight pants as well pants must be able to pinch an inch of material at the side so it's the loose-fitting pants girls shirts should be the tips of their fingers they should be long and modest length and we ask that the pants are not tucked inside the store even on the dress down days we do have these guidelines for our students as I mentioned earlier kg through 8th grade students have nwea map testing three times a year to check for gross they are required to be present during testing if there are any extenuating circumstances that you needed to not be in school during map testing you must send an email to me and we will have a conversation to figure out what's going on and to find the best to make sure that your child just get the just get tested within the testing window and we're able to accommodate you but as I mentioned earlier please avoid any major vacations during these times because it is just one more extra step for the child and it does kind of throw them off and it is good for them it is the practice practice for them to be testing with the rest of the class you know I'm finishing up the creek and so forth so please be mindful of this as well and Sharla so a lot of stuff that you know do's and don'ts but of course we are really also want this experience to be positive for student doesn't matter what age they are I mentioned mentioned earlier morning list for older students Michelle. They learn a lot of leadership skills through our morning assemblies a lot of them lead on certain days the assembly is the activities they got really involved of course it there it is the most important thing is that we start our day with remembrance a less pain with Isla and that sets are day and it's a practice that we are proud to be able to do at our school so students are hardly encouraged to come at 7:45 so they can take part in the assemblies we usually have a special announcement a bunch of stuff going on games and so forth the kids really enjoy it another thing that we do at the school is at we have we focus on a monthly character trait or interventionist sister Donna mohsen she works with all are students in preschool through eighth grade and introduces a character trait does different activities depending on the grade level has conversations with the students so we can embed these characters within our kids because as much as the content is support their character is even more important for us and we're working together with you as with our families to make sure that we have children of strong character and we have these assemblies that we recognized students that have shown an exemplify this characteristic within the school within the month and this year we have Circle time slash we're going to call it or restorative practice time where we have this time built into our schedule to just for community building it doesn't matter if our kids are late are we having for all our kids up till 8th grade and we're looking we're really looking forward to building us into our school culture we also in fourth through eighth grade have a married sister I'm sure if you have older students you've heard through it it's a great way for since we were were all right I think central having some technical difficulties so I'm going to go ahead and share my screen and just go ahead with the presentations just please give me one moment okay so I just we were talking about the 4th eighth grade math system for a student's grade an opportunity to receive a merit for any outstanding behavior that they do in or out more out of the classroom it doesn't have to be based on academic success to conduct another character they do a kind our teachers are I can give it to any act of kindness at the student dies so so the students can redeem those marriage for many different things and there's like you do hash out stop for ice cream fries or drink they sell accounts for like pizza or a big salad and we had kids in the past like collect enough to have their own personal dress down day in a Cook-Out milkshake an off-campus lunch and I'm in the end and we also occurred soon as if they want to as a homeroom class 22 to combine their marriage together and have one class celebration and last year that did happen where I believe it was fix Community sticks or 7th grade class where they combine their marriage together and they had a big class celebration at the end which was really great to see them kind of come together and like regardless of some had 15 Merritt some had 10 they still come by there can I show it really adds to the spirit of the school so that's our Merit system for students I'm volunteer hours so we believe that that your contribution to our school bye bye bye present for what for the different events that we do is really important for your child to see modeling acts of service and our community is a prophetic teaching on so this is something that we are trying to embed it in our culture by encouraging our parents to volunteer 20 hours of the school year per family says 20 hours for family towards any any sort of school initiative so this could end. spell field trips a teacher needs help with something any ptso event we just ask that if you do volunteer whether 30 minutes or an hour to please check in at the office with sister my Aunt because she the one that that documents your volunteer your volunteer hours for the family that are unable to fulfill the 20 hours they will be charged $200 they will be charged $200 in June what kind of seed is like a $200 donation cuz we know that not all families Ken 10 don t r 20 hours I'm so this is a donation for the school on for those I cannot launch are welcome back and spread I am so sorry I'm I'm going to be on my phone I think there's some around my house this is where we're at yeah okay if you could just go ahead and manage the presentation so we did our tardy policy on the reason we stopped at was an important policy that date is because we've seen the the effects of students coming consistently coming in late to school you know being on time is it is it is it part of their son Octavia and and having respect for time and just being on time and being present is really important so so students who are party after after 5 parties in a grading. So we have celebrating. It is a quarter the homeroom teacher will contact the parents of schedule a conference to see how we can how we can support your child and coming to school on time I understand the middle school a lot of times it's the kids are not getting out but but it's really important that we develop a strong routine and and and the discipline that's needed to wake up early enough to get to school on time cuz he's our life skill that we want our kids to have if there are more than 10 tardies grading. This is when our school will be involved and will will have a meeting with the parents and we are going to be having a written warning at that point about just documenting there has been more than 10 on 10 tardies and that we're going to end the end the parents will work with the interventionist to see how we can support the family if we do reach 15 tardies and a grading. And the parents will meet with the administration and the student will be placed on probation and for the remainder of the school year to determine enrollment so we are trying to take this really seriously as enrollment is sorry as as their punctuality is really important as you can imagine when they're coming and consistently late they are the thing is that I can point instructional time kittens know like people like kids or adults just generally need time to settle into a into a place before they can actually like you know hit the ground running so so so when a kid is so when a child is consistently late I'm not going to impact on how well they do in the class and it's a distraction to the class and it's just there's a lot of factors that playing that we feel like this time that we have to create a policy that in follow will embed a culture of punctuality and intersection time on the dismissal policy we felt that this was also 7.81 to touch on I can jump yeah thank you so much I'm sorry about the issues I'm having we are asking pair that we understand that you have appointments for your kids either medical or dental or so forth but we ask that you make them outside of school hours if that is something that you are not able to do Please be aware that there are certain times that we will not be dismissing this year even if so please manage the time accordingly and she'll let if you do have appointments you are required to come upstairs and to the front office to check your child out early however if you have an appointment at exactly 3 and you want to take your child up at 2:45 this year we will not be dismissing at that time because honestly you're also going to just get stuck in our carpool line so if you have an appointment around that time and we ask that you come before 2:30 and check out your child also we are asking that also I'm from the school so we need to encourage all our staff to go downstairs pick up your child so please come at least 20 min Barcelona and we will be happy to accommodate you in another area that we have noticed was happening last year his parents coming early on jump if they're attending the first shift and pick up their children early or after the second shift but of course this is even though Gemma is you know of course it's a blessing that were able to be part of the mod upper the school day is still going on there is still Cricket on being taught so we do ask that if there are no pending appointments please do not be picking up your children early afternoon with the lock please wait for their normal dismissal time and something that's also very important to understand stand especially on Fridays we will but there must be a still in adults that is dismissing your child your child cannot be dismissed the playground just because after we are responsible to hand your child to an adult and authorized adult that you have Justin skule Pro so there should be no reason Why students are going to be dismissed to you know not to somebody who's not an adult so for this missile policy if students I'm going to be really Frank if I catch any who just missing you I'm just run up to the playground at would be it will be in it and media in school suspension because in the end of the day it's just safety we've had a few we've had happened in the past and it's important that our kids are in proper care at all times and shows Bingo the next buy something to add another yes I see it thank you another update for this year is going to be in regards to cell phones we have updated our cell phone and smart devices policy this year we worked a lot on this post in the summer we did a lot of research we looked at a lot of policies at different schools we looked at the issues that were creeping up in our school and after a lot of question a lot of research we have decided that we will be a 50. French Freddy cell phone / smart devices we do understand that there are some advantages for cell phones but however in the classroom environment and within the school Cuts culture the advantages do not waver the bandages so this year we will be zero tolerance for cell phones and any Apple watches or any of those items would be considered a smart device as well so we're asking for those also not to be brought in will be enforcing the policy a little bit aggressively because we really do believe that this is going to be best for our students the first infraction would be the confiscation of the phone and an immediate conference with the administration and the families a second would be a one-day suspension a third would be a 3 days in suspension and after that we would have a conversation to see is this the right fit for our is this you know do something that we like the disadvantages to The Bullying the the recording and so many other things that were creeping up we're not something that we were comfy
